With the rapid development of display technology, LED displays have been widely used in many scenarios such as outdoor advertising, transportation hubs, industrial control, sports venues, etc. However, the complex outdoor weather environment, frequent human activities in public places, and dust and mechanical collisions in industrial scenes all pose severe challenges to the durability of display screens. Traditional SMD (Surface Mount) LED displays often lack anti-collision, dustproof, and waterproof performance due to limitations in packaging structure. COB (Chip on Board) LED displays, with their unique packaging technology, have achieved breakthrough improvements in these three protective features, providing more reliable display solutions for different application scenarios.
1、 COB packaging technology: the "innate gene" of triple protection
To understand the protective advantages of COB LED display screens, we first need to start with their core packaging technology. Unlike SMD technology, which packages individual LED chips into independent light beads and then attaches them to circuit boards, COB technology directly binds multiple bare LED chips to ceramic or metal substrates, and then covers them with a highly transparent and resilient epoxy resin or silicone protective layer through an overall encapsulation process. This "chip integration+overall packaging" structure fundamentally changes the protective ability of display screens - no longer relying on the tiny shell of a single light bead, but forming a continuous and complete protective barrier, laying a solid foundation for the improvement of anti-collision, dustproof, and waterproof performance.
2、 Anti collision feature: Hard core structure resists physical impact
In densely populated shopping malls, subways, or industrial workshops with mechanical operations, display screens are inevitably subject to accidental collisions. The lamp beads of traditional SMD display screens protrude from the surface of the circuit board, and the connection area between a single lamp bead and the substrate is small. Once subjected to external impact, it is prone to problems such as lamp bead detachment, cracking, or loose solder joints, resulting in "dead lights" and "dark spots" in the display area, affecting the overall display effect.
The anti-collision advantage of COB LED display screen comes from its "flat" and "integrated" structural design. On the one hand, the light-emitting surface of the COB display screen is flush with the substrate surface, without protruding light beads, reducing the probability of external forces directly hitting the light beads; On the other hand, the chip is directly connected to the substrate circuit through metal wires, and the high-strength potting adhesive covered externally can not only fix the chip and wires, but also disperse the impact force, avoiding damage caused by excessive local stress. After testing, high-quality COB LED displays can withstand the impact of a 500g steel ball falling from a height of 1 meter, while SMD displays are likely to experience bead breakage under the same conditions. This excellent anti-collision performance makes it more advantageous in collision prone scenarios such as public places and industrial controls.
3、 Dustproof feature: Seamless structure isolates fine particles
Dust is the "invisible killer" of display screens, especially in environments with high dust concentrations such as mines, factories, and deserts. Fine dust particles can enter the interior through the gaps of the display screen and adhere to the surfaces of circuit boards, chips, and optical components. Long term accumulation of dust not only affects heat dissipation efficiency, causing chip overheating and damage, but also blocks light, reduces display brightness and contrast, and shortens equipment lifespan.
Traditional SMD displays have small gaps between the lamp beads, and it is difficult to achieve complete sealing at the junction between the lamp beads and the substrate, making it easy for dust to enter through these gaps. The COB LED display screen, through the overall encapsulation process, forms a seamless protective film on the surface of the chip and substrate. This protective film is closely attached to the edge of the substrate without any gaps, fundamentally blocking the passage for dust to enter. In addition, the surface of the sealant is smooth, and even if there is a small amount of dust attached, it can be easily removed by simple wiping without affecting the inside of the display screen. In an industrial environment with a dust concentration of up to 10mg/m ³, COB LED displays can maintain cleanliness even after working continuously for one year, while SMD displays will experience a decrease in brightness due to dust accumulation after three months under the same conditions. This excellent dust-proof performance allows COB LED displays to operate stably even in harsh dust environments.
4、 Waterproof feature: IP67+rating to cope with complex water environments
Outdoor display screens often face the test of water environments such as rain, dew, and spray. Once moisture enters the interior of the display screen, it can cause circuit board short circuits, chip burnout, and equipment failure. Therefore, waterproof performance is one of the core indicators of outdoor display devices, usually measured by IP (Ingress Protection) protection level, where IP67 represents complete prevention of dust intrusion and will not be damaged after soaking in water at a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes, and IP68 represents the ability to soak in deeper water for a long time.
To achieve a waterproof rating of IP67 or higher for traditional SMD displays, an additional waterproof cover needs to be installed outside the LED beads, and complex sealing treatment needs to be applied to the display frame and back. This not only increases costs and thickness, but may also affect heat dissipation and display performance. The COB LED display screen, with its integrated packaging structure, naturally has an excellent waterproof foundation: the overall encapsulated protective film itself has good waterproof performance, which can prevent moisture from penetrating; At the same time, the frame of the display screen is tightly connected to the substrate with a silicone sealing ring, and the interface on the back is also waterproofed, forming a comprehensive waterproof system. At present, the waterproof level of mainstream COB LED displays generally reaches IP67, and some high-end products can even reach IP68, which can easily cope with rainstorm, spraying and other harsh water environments. In practical application, the COB LED display screen installed outdoors can still display normally after experiencing continuous rainstorm without any water ingress inside; Some SMD displays may experience water ingress issues due to aging sealant or damaged waterproof covers under the same conditions. This reliable waterproof performance makes COB LED displays an ideal choice for outdoor advertising, sports venues, municipal lighting, and other outdoor scenes.
5、 Triple protection support expands the application boundaries of COB LED display screens
The synergistic effect of the three major protective features of collision prevention, dust prevention, and water resistance has enabled COB LED displays to break through the application limitations of traditional display devices and demonstrate strong adaptability in more complex scenarios. In the outdoor field, it can be used for displaying highway billboards, city square screens, and seaside viewing platforms, without fear of wind, rain, and salt spray erosion; In the industrial field, it can handle monitoring screens in mine control rooms and factory production lines, and resist dust and mechanical collisions; In public places, it can be installed in subway passages, mall courtyards, and children's play areas, without fear of accidental collisions by personnel and daily dust accumulation.
With the continuous upgrading of technology, the protective performance of COB LED displays is still improving - for example, using more impact resistant ceramic substrates, more aging resistant potting materials, and more precise sealing processes. In the future, it is expected to achieve IP69 (high temperature and high pressure spray protection) level, further meeting the needs of extreme environments. It can be said that the triple protection feature of COB LED display screen not only enhances the durability and reliability of the product, but also promotes the extension of display technology to a wider range of application scenarios, injecting new vitality into the development of the industry.
